From manual SAP entry to end-to-end automation in meter verification: the PALMET story
A meter verification operation that ran on a limited handheld terminal and re-keyed test-bench readings into SAP by hand moved its entire workflow into a single system. With integration built into the test benches, measurement values are now collected automatically per meter serial number — the days of typing dozens of values for a single meter are over. Registration, measurement, maintenance, certification, and return shipping all run in one system, and certificates reach the customer automatically, e‑signed.

Problem
There was no pen-and-paper here — but the system in place couldn’t carry the work either. Data was keyed by hand into an old, fairly limited handheld terminal and pushed from there into SAP. The real bottleneck was at the test benches: for every meter, each reading from the bench machine was typed into SAP one by one. Entering dozens of values for a single meter was slow and error-prone at every step.
On top of that, the process was fragmented. Meter registration sat in one place, measurement in another, maintenance and certification somewhere else; tying them together — or simply seeing which stage a meter was at — was hard. And flow-device testing usually happened out in the field, where the connection was weak or absent, which made capturing the data on the spot impossible.
Solution
The company moved this scattered flow into a single end-to-end system: PALMET.
- Device registration on the handheld. The process starts by registering the meter on the handheld. The serial number goes into the system up front, and every later step runs off that identity.
- Test-bench integration — automatic measurement. With integration built into the test benches, measurement values are collected automatically per meter serial number. No more typing dozens of values for one meter, and no more re-keying into SAP.
- The full cycle in one system. Meter intake, measurement capture, maintenance, certification, and return shipping are all managed in a single system. Where a meter is and what stage it’s at shows on one screen.
- E-signed certificates, shared automatically. Certificates are signed with a qualified e‑signature and shared with the customer automatically. Wet signatures and hand-to-hand routing are gone.
- Offline field mode for flow devices. Flow-device tests run on-site in offline mode, even where there’s no connection. When the user finds a solid connection, the device data uploads to the system — the gap between field and center is no longer a blocker.
